JAGO - Traps
A 7 Days to Die mod by AMG5TAG. Version 1.0.0 for game version 3.4; installs on the server and client. Category: Gameplay.
Kills by spike traps, barbed wire, blade traps and landmines are credited to a nearby survivor, scaled by Advanced Engineering, and all trap kill XP is shared with your party. Settings in Gears.
Description
In vanilla, a zombie killed by spikes, barbed wire or a landmine often gives no XP at all, because nobody gets credit for the kill. JAGO - Traps gives that credit to a nearby survivor, scaled by the Advanced Engineering perk, so a trap-heavy base levels you up instead of only keeping you alive.
It's built for groups. Trap kill XP is shared with your party like a normal kill, including turret and dart trap kills, and anyone who has grouped with an Advanced Engineering player permanently picks up that player's trap XP rank. The whole party benefits from the defences.
Features
- Trap kill credit: when a zombie or animal is killed by a block and nobody has been credited (spike traps, barbed wire, landmines and similar), the kill goes to the nearest living player within the ownership radius (default 30 m). The nearest player with Advanced Engineering is preferred; if nobody in range has the perk, the nearest player is credited anyway.
- Perk-scaled XP: the credited player earns kill XP scaled by their trap XP value from Advanced Engineering (15, 30, 45, 60 or 75% at ranks 1 to 5, the vanilla values). Without the perk they earn none themselves, but the party share still goes out.
- Party sharing: trap kills go through the normal party XP share, which vanilla skips for traps. This covers the kills this mod credits as well as auto turret and dart trap kills.
- Shared trap XP rank: an Advanced Engineering player passes their rank (1 to 5) to party members and allies through a hidden buff. You get the matching trap XP value only if your own rank is lower, so it never lowers anyone.
- Permanent by design: once granted, the shared rank stays for the life of the character. It only ever goes up; leaving the party or the perk holder respeccing does not remove it.
Settings
In Gears under World. These are server settings, because kill credit is decided on the server. config.json in the mod folder holds the starting values, and the Gears world settings replace them when the world loads.
- Ownership Radius: how close (in metres) a player must be to a trap kill to be credited. Default 30; choices 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75.
- Share Trap Kills With Party: trap kill XP is shared with the credited player's party. Default On.
- Prefer Players With The Trap XP Perk: the nearest player with Advanced Engineering is credited first. Off: simply the nearest player. Default On.
- Debug Log: logs each trap kill and who was credited. Default Off.
- Trace XP: logs every kill XP award and party share. Very noisy; for troubleshooting only. Default Off.
Compatibility
- Kill credit only applies when vanilla credits nobody. Kills vanilla already credits to an owner (such as turrets and dart traps) keep their owner; this mod only adds the party share to them. Which trap blocks credit nobody is decided by the game, not by a list in this mod.
- The credit goes to the nearest player, not necessarily whoever built the trap.
- Advanced Engineering's own trap XP values are unchanged; the party-sharing triggers are appended to it.
- Buff and cvar names keep their older AMG5TAGShareTrapXP identifiers on purpose, so existing characters keep the ranks they have been granted.
- Settings text is English only.
Requirements
- Contains a DLL, so EasyAntiCheat (EAC) must be off.
- Requires Gears.
- Install on the server and every player's game. Kill credit and party sharing run on the server; the perk and buff changes are XML and belong on every machine.
- Unzip into your Mods folder and keep the folder name ZZ-AMG5TAG-JAGO-Traps exactly as it is: the ZZ- prefix sets the load order.
- Works on its own. Every JAGO mod is independent, so you can install just this one.
Installation
Step 1: Install JAGO - Traps on the server and on every player's game, all on the same version. In single player, install it on your own game.
Step 2: Download the zip and unzip it into the game's Mods folder, so you end up with Mods/ZZ-AMG5TAG-JAGO-Traps/ModInfo.xml. For the game that is the Mods folder in the install folder (in Steam: right-click 7 Days to Die > Manage > Browse local files; create Mods if it isn't there). For a dedicated server it is the Mods folder next to the server executable.
Step 3: Keep the folder name ZZ-AMG5TAG-JAGO-Traps exactly as it is: the ZZ- prefix sets the load order. Don't put it inside another folder.
Step 4: This mod contains a DLL, so EasyAntiCheat must be off: start the game without EAC (untick EasyAntiCheat in the launcher), and on a dedicated server set EACEnabled to false in serverconfig.xml.
Step 5: Install Gears (Mod Settings Manager) as well, on the server and every player's game. This mod doesn't work without it.
Step 6: Start (or restart) the server and the game. To update, delete the old folder and unzip the new version the same way on the server and every player's game at the same time.
Changelog
JAGO - Traps: changelog
=======================
1.0.0 (27 Oct 2026)
- First public release.
Development history
-------------------
Before its public release this mod was developed and run privately, with its own version numbers (the last was 2.4.0). Those notes are kept below for reference; none of those versions were released to the public.
2.4.0 (26 Oct 2026)
- Settings are now in the Gears menu (World > JAGO - Traps: Kill Credit, and JAGO - Traps: Debugging): ownership radius (10 to 75 m), share trap kills with party, prefer players with the trap XP perk, and the two debug log switches. They are server settings.
- config.json is still read at startup and supplies the starting values; the Gears world settings replace them when the world loads.
- Note: the mod now needs Gears installed.
2.3.3 (26 Oct 2026)
- Spike trap, barbed wire and landmine kills now always give team XP. Before, the kill was only credited if a player with Advanced Engineering was nearby, so with nobody perked in range nobody was credited and the party got nothing.
- The nearest player with the perk is still preferred. If nobody in range has it, the nearest player is credited instead, so the party share goes out either way. The credited player only earns their own trap XP if they have the perk, as in vanilla.
2.3.2 (26 Oct 2026)
- Fix: auto turret and dart trap kills were never shared with the party. They now are, like other trap kills.
