Base Building
Base building is one of the core pillars of 7 Days to Die, giving you a defensible home to store loot, craft, sleep, and survive the recurring horde nights that arrive roughly every seven days. A good base balances protection against zombies with practical access to workstations, storage, and the surrounding world.
Choosing a Location
Where you settle shapes how hard survival becomes. Consider these factors before committing:
- Biome difficulty: the pine forest is the gentlest starting area, while the wasteland and burnt forest throw tougher enemies and harsher conditions at you.
- Nearby resources: proximity to water, trees, stone, and traders shortens supply runs.
- Terrain: elevated ground, cliffs, and natural chokepoints make defense easier.
Many players repurpose an existing point of interest, such as a house or store, while others build from scratch for full control over the layout.
Core Elements
Every functional base tends to include a few essentials:
- A Land Claim Block to protect your build from decay and reduce enemy interference in the surrounding area.
- Storage containers to organize food, ammunition, building materials, and tools.
- Workstations like the forge, workbench, cement mixer, and chemistry station for advanced crafting.
- A bedroll or bed to set your respawn point and mark the area as home.
Defense Strategy
Zombies actively path toward players during blood moons, so your defenses must funnel and slow them.
- Use trenches, spikes, and elevated walkways to control approach routes.
- Build with upgraded materials such as reinforced concrete for durability.
- Keep firing positions that let you hit enemies while staying out of reach.
Horde Night Considerations
Blood moon hordes scale with your game stage, meaning defenses that work early will be overwhelmed later. Plan to reinforce walls, add electric fences or dart traps, and maintain escape routes.
Expanding Over Time
Start small and grow as materials allow. Early bases are often simple wood or cobblestone boxes, later evolving into multi-level fortresses. Always mind structural integrity so upper floors and overhangs do not collapse under their own weight or during an attack.
