Crafting Basics
Crafting is the heart of survival in 7 Days to Die, letting you turn gathered resources into tools, weapons, armor, ammunition, food, and building materials. Nearly everything you use can be crafted once you have the right ingredients, recipes, and workstations.
The Crafting Menu
Open your inventory to access the crafting interface, which lists items you can build. Recipes show the required ingredients and highlight which items you already have. Simple recipes can be crafted directly from your inventory, while more advanced ones require a workstation to be nearby and active.
Unlocking Recipes
- Perks and Attributes — Spending points in the skill tree unlocks and improves crafting recipes, letting you build higher-quality gear.
- Magazines and Schematics — Reading looted magazines and schematics unlocks specific recipes and increases the tier of items you can craft. Collecting series of magazines steadily expands your abilities.
- Crafting Quality — Many items are crafted at a quality tier from basic to high-end; your perk levels influence the maximum tier you can produce.
Workstations
Advanced crafting requires dedicated stations, each specializing in different outputs:
- Forge — Smelts ores and shapes metal into parts, tools, and components.
- Workbench — Assembles complex tools, weapons, and mechanical items.
- Chemistry Station — Produces gunpowder, ammunition, medicine, and refined chemicals.
- Cement Mixer — Turns stone and materials into concrete and building supplies.
Practical Tips
- Gather common resources early — wood, stone, plant fibers, and scrap metal feed most basic recipes.
- Build a Forge as soon as possible; it unlocks the metal economy that powers everything else.
- Some workstations use fuel or time to process ingredients, so queue up batches and let them run while you explore.
- Prioritize magazines that match your playstyle to unlock the tools and weapons you rely on.
- Keep a well-organized storage area near your workstations so ingredients are easy to find during crafting sessions.
