Dedicated Servers
A Dedicated Server lets you host a persistent 7 Days to Die world that runs independently of any single player's game client. It is the standard way to run a stable multiplayer world that stays online even when the owner is away.
What a Dedicated Server Offers
- A persistent world that other players can join at any time.
- Better performance than a player-hosted game, since the server does not also render the game.
- Full control over settings, admin permissions, and installed mods.
Setup Overview
The server software is available through Steam as a separate tool and can be run on Windows or Linux. After installing, you launch it with a startup script and configure it before players connect.
Configuration
serverconfig.xml: the main settings file controlling server name, password, player count, difficulty, world size, and gameplay options.- Admin permissions are managed in a separate admin file that lists trusted player IDs and their permission levels.
- Port forwarding is required so players outside your network can connect; open the default game ports on your router or firewall.
Administration
- Use the developer console and telnet or a web control panel to run admin commands remotely.
- Commands let you kick or ban players, set time and weather, and manage the world.
- Regular backups of the save directory protect against corruption or unwanted changes.
Mods and Maintenance
- Mods are installed into the server's Mods folder, and all connecting players generally need matching client-side mods.
- Keep the server updated to match the client version, since mismatches block connections.
Tips
- Set a strong admin password and keep the admin list small.
- Schedule automatic restarts to clear memory and refresh performance.
- Test major settings or mod changes on a copy of the world before applying them live.
