Difficulty Settings
7 Days to Die offers extensive difficulty and gameplay customization, letting you tailor a run to be a relaxed building sandbox or a brutal survival challenge. Most of these options are set when creating a game and some can be adjusted later.
Core Difficulty Levels
The main difficulty setting scales combat challenge across several named tiers, ranging from the easiest to the hardest. Higher difficulty generally means:
- Zombies deal more damage to you.
- You deal less damage to zombies, so fights take longer.
- Survival feels tenser, though loot and core mechanics stay similar.
Newer players often start on a lower or middle setting and raise it once they are comfortable with combat and base defense.
Blood Moon and Horde Settings
Several options specifically control the seventh-night horde experience.
- Blood Moon frequency lets you change how often horde nights occur, or disable them entirely.
- Blood Moon count adjusts the maximum number of zombies that can chase you at once, which heavily affects performance and challenge.
World and Survival Options
When starting a world you can also tune many other systems to shape the overall experience.
- Loot abundance and loot respawn timing.
- Day length and the ratio of daylight to darkness.
- Zombie movement speed during the day, at night, and while feral or in hordes.
- Experience multiplier and how quickly you progress.
- Whether you drop your backpack or lose items on death.
- Air drops and how frequently supply crates appear.
Choosing Your Setup
There is no single correct configuration. If you want to focus on creative base building, lower zombie speed and reduce horde size. If you crave a hardcore test, raise difficulty, enable running zombies at night, and shorten the days. Because so many settings are independent, you can craft an experience that matches exactly how you like to play.
