Infection
Infection is one of the most dangerous debuffs in 7 Days to Die. It is contracted from zombie attacks and, if left untreated, progresses through worsening stages that eventually threaten your life. Understanding how it spreads and how to cure it is essential to long-term survival.
How You Get Infected
Every time a zombie strikes you, there is a chance to gain or increase infection. Higher-tier and feral zombies carry a greater risk. Wearing more protective armor reduces the chance that any given hit will infect you, which is one reason good gear matters beyond raw damage reduction.
How Infection Progresses
Infection is measured as a percentage that climbs steadily over time once contracted. As it rises it moves through stages:
- Early stage: minor discomfort with little mechanical penalty, but the meter keeps climbing.
- Mid stage: reduced maximum Stamina and general performance loss.
- Late stage: severe penalties as the percentage approaches its ceiling.
- If the infection is allowed to reach 100 percent, your character dies.
Taking additional zombie hits accelerates the climb, so fighting while infected is doubly risky.
Curing Infection
Several items reduce or eliminate infection:
- Antibiotics (Recog or crafted) are the most effective cure and can knock out even advanced infection.
- Honey, harvested from stumps or looted, cures early-stage infection and is an important early-game option.
- Herbal Antibiotics, craftable from ingredients like goldenrod tea and other plants, offer a mid-tier remedy.
Practical Tips
- Always carry honey in the early game; it is cheap and can save your life before you find antibiotics.
- Cure infection at the first opportunity rather than waiting, since the meter only rises.
- Upgrade your armor to lower infection chance on hits.
- After any Blood Moon or tough fight, check your status and treat infection immediately.
