Melee Weapons
Melee weapons are close-range tools for killing zombies and, in a pinch, harvesting resources in 7 Days to Die. They cost no ammunition, making them essential backups and, for many players, primary weapons throughout the game.
Weapon Categories
Melee weapons in the game fall into a few broad families, each tied to a perk that boosts its effectiveness:
- Blunt weapons: clubs, baseball bats, and the sledgehammer. High stagger and knockdown, tied to the Pummel Pete perk.
- Blade weapons: knives, machetes, and similar. Fast attacks with strong bleed and dismemberment, tied to the Deep Cuts perk.
- Spears: reach weapons that can also be thrown, letting you hit from slightly farther and retreat, tied to the Sexual Tyrannosaurus / spear perk line.
- Bladed tools and the stun baton, an electrical weapon that stuns and chains between targets.
Progression
Weapons come in tiers, from crude early-game craftables to high-quality endgame gear:
- Early: stone spear, wooden club, simple knives.
- Mid: baseball bat, machete, iron reinforced clubs.
- Late: sledgehammer, steel knuckles, quality steel weapons with modded stats.
Mods and Quality
Melee weapons accept mods that add effects such as burning damage, extra durability, or improved handling. Weapon quality (from level 1 to 6) increases base damage, durability, and mod slots, so upgrading to higher-quality versions of the same weapon is a meaningful boost.
Practical Tips
- Invest perk points into one melee family early rather than spreading thin.
- Use power attacks (hold attack) for heavy stagger and dismemberment, but watch your stamina.
- The stun baton pairs well with a robotic sledge or turret for crowd control.
- Aim for the head to maximize damage and knockdown.
- Keep a repair kit handy; melee weapons degrade with use and lose effectiveness when worn.
