Modding Overview

7 Days to Die has strong built-in mod support, letting players change nearly every part of the game from item balance to entirely new systems and content. Mods are loaded from a dedicated Mods folder in the game directory, making installation and removal straightforward.

Types of Mods

XML Config Mods

Most gameplay is driven by XML configuration files that define items, recipes, blocks, entities, and progression. XML mods edit or add to these files to tweak balance, add new craftable items, or adjust spawn rates. They are the easiest mods to make and are usually compatible across many game versions.

Harmony and DLL Mods

For changes that XML cannot reach, mods can use compiled C# code loaded through the Harmony patching library. These DLL mods can alter core game logic, add new mechanics, and hook into the engine directly. They are more powerful but require programming knowledge and are more sensitive to game updates.

Custom Prefabs and Assets

Modders can add custom prefabs (buildings and points of interest), new textures, models, and sounds. Prefabs let creators design original structures that appear in the world or in quests.
