Zombies
Zombies are the primary threat in 7 Days to Die, roaming the world by day and swarming in massive numbers during the Blood Moon horde. They come in many forms, escalating in toughness and danger as you progress through the game.
Behavior
Zombies detect players through sight, sound, and smell. During the day most wander slowly, but they become far more aggressive at night. Loud actions such as gunfire, digging, and construction attract them, and screamers can summon extra waves if they hear too much noise near your base.
A defining trait is their persistence: zombies actively pathfind toward players and will attack and destroy structures to reach you. This block-damaging behavior is why base design and reinforced building materials matter so much.
Difficulty Scaling
The game tracks a hidden Gamestage value based on your level and days survived. As it rises:
- Weaker walkers are gradually replaced by tougher variants.
- Feral and radiated versions appear, hitting harder and moving faster.
- Blood Moon hordes grow larger and include more dangerous special zombies.
Day vs Night
By default, many zombies shamble during daylight but sprint at night, making darkness genuinely threatening. On Blood Moon nights, essentially all attackers run and target players relentlessly regardless of the hour.
Combat Notes
- Headshots deal bonus damage and are the fastest way to drop most zombies.
- Sneak attacks against unaware zombies deal large stealth-damage multipliers.
- Dismembering limbs can slow or cripple attackers.
- Zombies can knock you down, stun, and infect you, so armor and positioning are key.
Practical Tips
- Fight during the day when most zombies are slow and manageable.
- Keep noise down near your base to avoid drawing extra attention.
- Aim for the head and keep a melee backup for when ammo runs low.
- Build with upgraded blocks and funnel zombies into kill zones for Blood Moon defense.
